Chapter 11

Lost In A Blizzard

Wilensky sprang into action. The five kidnappers were handcuffed and shoved into their cars. "We'll get a search party together in town as soon as we get these birds locked up," the FBI man explained.

Weller kept wailing as they were driven to Calaboo. "Let us help. You can use us. I've got a big stake in that kid. He's got to make that game Saturday."

"Is that all you're interested in?" Joe asked. "If he wasn't a great football player, would you be so interested in his safety?"

Weller looked hurt. "I ain't made of stone. I got a heart, too. Only business is business. You got to remember, if he wasn't a football star, he wouldn't be here."

"That's right. He'd be at the university all safe and sound," Frank pointed out.

Weller shook his head. "Ace never should have run away. He should have remembered I was his friend."

"One of his close buddies," Joe said, but the gambler missed the sarcasm.

When they reached the village, John Wilensky rushed for a phone. He called the state police and the forest rangers. Mr. Potts gathered together a number of local guides, and within an hour, a large search party had assembled in the town square.

"All right, men," John Wilensky shouted, "you all know what you have to do. We're going to Caleb Hutchinson's cabin. There we'll fan out."

Frank and Joe had brought boots, heavy socks, an extra sweater each, caps, mufflers, and gloves. "Now I feel prepared," Joe said.

As the party was getting into their cars, Mr. Potts came running out of his store. "I thought you'd like to know that a late fall cold snap is coming fast from the west accompanied by snow, according to the radio."

"Thanks," said the agent. "That makes it more urgent that we find Ace quickly."

Once back at the cabin, the searchers were split up into groups of two and went off in different directions. Frank and Joe walked due east where Ace's guard had come from.

There was a trail so narrow that they had to walk in single file. They assumed that Ace and the guard had run along it. But at what point had Ace escaped?

"What direction did he go in?" Joe wondered aloud.

"It's all guesswork," Frank said.

Each group of the search party had been given a radio. The one in Frank's pocket crackled. "Group fourteen, come in, please," came John Wilensky's voice from his command post back at the cabin.

Frank held the speaker up to his mouth and pushed a button. "Group fourteen reporting."

"Joe and Frank, we're just checking on the reception. You're coming in loud and clear. Please call in every half-hour or so and report immediately if you find Ace or anything that might tell us the direction he went in."

"Will do," Frank said and put the radio back into his pocket.

A cold wind began to blow at their backs. Above them, gray clouds raced eastward. They pulled their jacket zippers up to their necks. "I just hope that snow holds off," Joe said.
