Chapter 10

Face-to-Face with a Suspect

"Stop!" yelled Frank.

Startled, the attacker looked up. He hurled a food tray at Frank, scattering eggs and splashing hot tea all over the room. Frank ducked, and the tray sailed over his shoulder. The man tried to run away, but Spike Nolan grabbed his hospital coat.

As the man tried to wriggle free, Joe ran over and leapt on him, knocking him to the floor. They wrestled. Then the man tossed Joe away from his body easily. .

"Go after him," yelled Nolan. "He's getting away."

Joe got to his feet quickly, but slipped on a pile of scrambled eggs. As he fell, the man grabbed him and aimed a punch at his jaw. Joe moved his head away in time, and the man struck the wall instead. Thrown off balance, he released his grip on Joe, who fell to the floor.

The man tried to run from the room, but Frank blocked his path. Frank moved closer to him. Suddenly, as Joe was about to jump him again, the man reached into his pants pocket and pulled out a switchblade knife. He flicked it open and pointed it at Frank. Joe froze.

"Stay right where you are," the man commanded.

Frank didn't move. "You won't get away with this," he said.

"Shut up, kid. You and your brother are sticking your noses into things that don't concern you. I ought to teach you both a lesson."

"Leave them alone," Nolan cried. "They've got nothing to do with this. It's me you want."

The man momentarily shifted his gaze to Nolan. Now's my chance, thought Frank. He hurled himself through the air, hitting the man across the legs. The knife skittered across the room as the two of them tumbled to the floor.

The man was bigger and stronger than Frank. After a few seconds of tussling, he managed to trap Frank in a stranglehold. Then he looked up. Joe was rushing headfirst toward him. The man released Frank, ripped down the courtesy curtain, and tossed it over both brothers.

While the Hardys struggled to get out from under the curtain, the man bent down and retrieved his knife. Then he yanked the door open and ran out of the room.

"He's getting away!" Nolan yelled.

The Hardys finally managed to untangle themselves from the curtain. They hurried over to Nolan to see if he was all right.

Nolan was a sorry sight. His i.v. tube had been pulled from its plastic squeeze bottle, and it trailed beside him. The back of Nolan's hospital pajamas had loosened and his polka-dot underwear was showing.

"Don't worry about me," Nolan said. "Get that guy!"

Frank stayed with Nolan while Joe took off in pursuit of the man. He saw a white coat trailing from the staircase door. Joe raced for the stairs.

In the stairwell, he could hear the man breathing heavily, and Joe knew he was tiring. I'll get him now, he thought.

At the base of the stairs, Joe got a good look at the man he was following. And found that he had been chasing the wrong guy.
