Day 18

The Very Important People

The whirring brings everyone on deck. Wolfie and I

run and poke our way through to where we can

watch the seaplane as it glides to a stop alongside us.

A man puffed up with cigars and a straw hat

staggers onto a skiff. Behind him follows

a woman with a big white hat and a kind face.

She holds on to her hat like it’s gold

as the seaplane that usually brings

our mail takes off again.

Father says they are

Very Important People

sent down from New York

to help us get off the ship. The man,

Mr. Berenson, knows how Cubans think,

Father says. The woman, Miss Razovsky,

will talk to us to see what we need.

I think it’s all smoke and wind

and they won’t be able to help us at all.
