Keeping in Touch with the Community

Successful politicians are in with the heartbeat of their constituents. Successful leaders in education must also be attuned to the needs of the community and maintain an ever-present yet always positive place. This can be accomplished by attending not only Parent-Teacher-Student Association meetings but any variety of other community-sponsored meetings as well. Planning and reviewing funding must include the entire community since there is a direct connection between the schools and their surroundings.

While the connections are many, some of the most important are based around issues such as business and shifts in demographics. An increase in a special section of the population—such as an influx in immigration or the increase of the number of elderly residents—could mean a need for a change in certain school programs.

Although each of the five characteristics of a successful leader is extremely important on its own and all do generally intertwine, many times keeping a positive close and constant relationship with the community can prove the most important. How? The best answer: in every way conceivably possible, and then some.

For example, keeping in touch with the business community could be helpful in attaining support and/or funds through such actions as business partnership programs. Local businesses, no matter how big or small, are a wealth of resources. They might provide a body of professionals who supply your school(s) with a mentorship program. Some things these programs can offer are the following:
