You can do karaoke in your dorm room or apartment by using cheap karaoke computer software, your computer speakers, and a microphone; by purchasing a cheap karaoke machine with limited functionality; or by simply looking up YouTube videos of karaoke versions of your favorite songs.

You can also go out to a bar or club. A lot of bars host karaoke and have impressive song banks to choose from. These bars usually host their own karaoke nights on a weekly or monthly basis, so you’ll have to do some research and stay on top of schedules before you head out. However, twenty-one-plus rules usually apply for entry, unless the venue is hosting a special all-ages, alcohol-free night.

Another option for on-the-town karaoke is to go to a karaoke venue with private rooms. These rooms usually charge by the hour, so if you can pack in a lot of friends, the cost per person will be cheaper. Private rooms are also great because you don’t have to fight with other patrons to get on the mic, and you don’t have to worry about singing in front of strangers. Renting a private room is a really great birthday party option, but let’s be serious—karaoke never goes out of style (in part because it’s never really in style either).
