CHAPTER 11

They returned to the Academy, not waiting—or wanting—to see Anita discover her husband's body.

"I'll take Mr Pelmore's ghost to the Containment Room," said Professor Mackintosh. "Let him know what he's got to look forward to."

"Can we watch?" asked Alex.

Professor Mackintosh shook his head, turned on his heel and walked away.

"Don't take it personally," said Professor Granville to Alex. "It's Mitch's way of dealing with his actions."

"No one's going to enjoy killing," said Lauren, her gaze on Professor Mackintosh's retreating form.

"Unless you're a freak, like him," said Esmee, a sour look on her face. "He seemed happy enough to volunteer for the job."

"Mitch is...complicated," said Professor Granville. "Trust me, he didn't volunteer because of his love of this particular part of our job."

Esmee and Lauren exchanged a knowing glance.

"It will soon be the start of morning lessons," said Professor Granville. "You can either return to your rooms or go into the kitchen or lounge. The Academy is available for you to use as you would like."

She left them in the lounge and Alex walked along the rows of books, pulling the occasional one out and flipping through the pages. Charlie and Lauren sat together on the couch and Esmee stared out the window.

"This has been the weirdest, longest day of my life," said Lauren, leaning back on the couch. "I should be feeling tired, but I don't."

"You mean your death," said Charlie, smiling over at Lauren.

"We've not done much to exhaust ourselves," said Alex, turning from the books. "We've just watched some dead Professors do their thing, and tried a few nifty ghost tricks. I bet Professor Mackintosh is feeling it, after all he just ended a guy's life."

"Yeah, that was intense," said Charlie. "I don't know if I could make that call, you know, kill a guy. What if he changed his mind tomorrow and decided he did love his wife and kids again?"

"It was the right thing to do," said Esmee as she turned from the window. "How many chances do you give someone who's being a jerk?"

"Esmee, I'm definitely putting you forward for Empath of the Year Award," said Lauren.

"There's a few of my scummy ex-boyfriends I wouldn't mind trying the heart squeeze thing on," said Esmee, ignoring Lauren's comment. "Billy Anderson, who dumped me at the prom, the actual prom, right on the dance floor. Justin Cleaver, who puked on my favourite shoes after drinking too much beer. Oh, and Myles Springfield, for just being the most annoying kisser in the world. All spit and tongue and no technique."

"All offenses that do indeed require instant execution," said Lauren.

"Don't tell me there aren't a few sleazes in your life that you'd like to get revenge on?" she asked, coming to sit in the chair opposite Lauren and Charlie.

"Maybe one or two, but I don't want them dead." Lauren paused. "Well, maybe only one of them."

"Spill, tell me everything. Was he a cheater?" asked Esmee, curling her feet underneath her and leaning forward.

"He was just mean, and he hurt me," said Lauren, looking down at her hands.
