Heaven on Earth

The large white limestone rock called Mount Moriah served as the foundation stone (bedrock) inside the Holy of Holies in Solomon’s Temple. Just as in Moses’ Tabernacle, the Ark of the Covenant was the central piece of sacred furniture. Solomon placed the Ark under the wings of two large cherubim made of olive wood and covered with gold. One wing of each angel touched above the Ark, while the other wing touched the walls behind where they stood (2 Chronicles 3:11-13). These golden angels stood as silent guardians over the Ark, which was a miniature throne of God on earth. When it was transported in Moses’ day, four Levites bore the Ark on their shoulders (1 Chronicles 15:15). These four priests were a pattern of the four angels who carry the throne of God as seen in the vision of the prophet Ezekiel (Ezekiel chapter 1).

Directly before the Ark was a large veil with beautiful cherubim embroidered on the curtain (Exodus 26:31). The veil hid the Ark and separated the people from entering the Holy of Holies. The Hebrews saw only the outline of the cherubim and never the inner chamber of the Holy Place.

When Solomon constructed the Temple on the mountain, he also constructed several gates which led into the city and to the Temple of God. The main gate for both Solomon and Herod’s Temple was the Eastern Gate, also known as the King’s Gate. Little is known about this gate from the time of Solomon. However, this gate was well known in the time of Christ. It was called the Golden Gate, and the “gate called beautiful” (Acts 3:2). It served as the main entrance leading into the Temple from the east side. When a worshipper who traveled from the Judean Wilderness from the east reached the top of the Mount of Olives and looked down on Mount Moriah, they would see the Eastern Gate. If the gates of the Temple were opened, they could have seen the veil with the cherubim silently and symbolically guarding the entrance to the presence of God.

The massive and expensive Temple of Solomon took seven years to complete. All of Israel gathered on Mount Moriah and countless animals were offered to God as a sacrifice. As the priests began to sing and worship God, the glory of the Lord fell upon the mountain and the priests could not even stand to minister (2 Chronicles 5:14). This Temple would become the meeting place between God and Israel for 480 years.
