Told I threw like a girl

I waited out in the shadows

while the infielders made spectacular leaps

—by luck or memory of the future?

Some threw like older girls,

some hurled streaks of evening,

all grew equally remote

as night fell and the voices

singing no batter, no pitcher

faded under crickets.

I pounded my glove,

spat, dug my cleats

savagely in the sod

and growled swing.

Secretly, I was proudest of my skill

at standing alone in darkness.
