Chapter 21

“Welcome to my home,” Rex said as the guys piled into the living room after Rex had given them a tour of the space. They’d just returned from viewing the land they were interested in, and since it’d been much more than they’d expected—with existing permits for a horse breeding operation, very fertile land with lots of hay and alfalfa, and more than enough acreage to build out the operation as they desired—they’d made an offer on the spot.

The view of the land with its rolling hills had almost been as good as that of Dexin ranch, and it was a miracle that the place had been up for sale—the owners of the property had passed on, and their kids, who had moved to another state, weren’t interested in returning. And though the ranch needed much work to make it more habitable, with several old buildings that had to be torn down, it had good bones and was well worth it. Rex could already see the horses running through the land in his mind. Now all they had to do was wait to hear back.

“Ah, I could live here,” Cole said as he collapsed on the larger couch and put his feet up.

“This is really nice,” Weston said, settling into a loveseat. “And your brothers built it? They must love you very much.”

“Yes, he’s one lucky man,” Cole said. “I can’t see you or Liam doing the same for me.” Liam hurled a throw pillow at his head from where he sat on a smaller couch, and Cole managed to dodge it. “Hey, what was that for?”

“We might just decide to exclude you from the new ranch if you keep running your mouth,” Liam said.

“You can’t do that,” Cole said with a smirk as he settled back into the couch. “Rex won’t let you.”

“So speaking of family,” Weston said, “have you told them about Tammy?”

Rex sat on a couch arm. “Not yet.”

“I know you, Rex,” Liam said. “You won’t be at peace until you do.”

Rex ran a hand through his hair. “I know. I’ll probably talk to them soon.”

But how was he going to bring it up? And what if Max and his family got mad at him when they heard the details?

Still, he owed it to Tammy to tell them the truth.

Rex didn’t have to think about that right now. “So are you guys staying for lunch?” he asked instead.

“I wish we could, but Grandma wants us back in Boston,” Liam said. “She’s keeping us on a tight leash now we’re on the east coast. For now, we’re going with the flow just to make her happy until we purchase the land.”

“Hopefully they’ll accept our offer, and we can proceed from there,” Weston said. “Though we’ll keep scouting for other real estate just in case this one falls through.”

Then Cole straightened, reached out for something he’d caught sight of on the floor, and picked it up.

Rex grimaced. It was his old copy of Oliver Twist. It was as
