The next day, I find myself at the annual Gingerbread House competition, where I'm supposed to judge alongside Henry. It's something we've done since I moved to Evergreen Lakes, a fun, lighthearted tradition that usually brings cheer to the holiday season. But this year, it feels different. As I stand among the elaborately decorated gingerbread houses, inhaling the sweet scent of cinnamon and cloves, I can't help but feel a sense of unease. The idea that Isabella isn’t at my side makes for a physical ache I never knew was possible.

"Jackson, are you okay?" Henry asks, concern etched on his face.

"Uh, yeah," I stammer, trying to shake off the memories of last night. "Just feeling a bit...distracted."

Before he can respond, I spot Isabella walking into the room, her eyes scanning the crowd before landing on me. An awkward tension hangs in the air as our gazes lock, and I struggle to find the right words to say. She seems just as reserved, her usual vivacious energy replaced with a quiet hesitance.

"Hey, Isabella," I manage to choke out, forcing a smile onto my lips.

"Hi, Jackson. Hi, Dad," she says softly, her cheeks flushing ever so slightly. It's clear that both of us are still reeling from the events of the previous night, though Henry remains blissfully unaware.

"Peanut, so glad you came." Henry chimes in, his enthusiasm unmarred by the undercurrents between us.

"I wouldn't miss it," she replies, her voice wavering just a touch.

Throughout the judging process, I wrestle with the decision to face the consequences and reveal my feelings to Isabella and her father. The memory of our kiss plays on a loop in my mind, making it almost impossible to focus on the task at hand. Frustration builds within me, but as I watch her with her dad and how they laugh, my heart drops at the idea of messing things up for them.

They’re all each other has, and I hate to cause any friction between them.

Isabella radiates like an angel and I soak it all in. I’ll only ever have the kiss and get to see her around from time to time, but it’ll have to be enough.
