Chapter Nine

It was impossible for Ginny not to be worried, because in the past week the restaurant had gone from packed to the gills to a desolate wasteland.

It made her seriously consider Savannah’s offer. How easy would it be to close the shop, sell the place and move home? Return to the life and the people that she knew. It would be like slipping into a pair of old shoes. They were already broken in, and she knew they would be comfortable. This would be the same.

But as tempting as it was, Ginny had a life here, and she wasn’t going to simply jump ship. However, if business didn’t pick up, and soon, she would have to sell. There was no way around that.

She kept her fears hidden from her daughters, though. There was no point in having them worry. But even though she tried to hide things from them, they were smart and didn’t miss much.

“Maybe we should open up a food truck,” Reece said in passing one morning. “That way we can travel wherever we need to in order to make money.”

Ginny grimaced. “Do things look that bad?”

“They look kinda bad.” Her daughter hefted a tray of glass dishes filled with banana pudding into the refrigerator. “I just don’t get it. What’s going on?”

She gritted her teeth. “I’d like to know, too.”

And that was all they said about it until it was time to open, and the first customer of the day was Aiden, who beamed when he saw Ginny.

Well, beaming was the first thing he did. The second was to scan the dining room and frown. “Where is everybody?”

She rested her hip on the counter. “It’s been like this for nearly two weeks.”

“Huh. That doesn’t seem right.”

“You and I agree on that.”

“But the Christmas decorations look good.”

“At least one thing does,” she grumbled.

Aiden’s expression fell. “Things’ll pick up. It’s probably just folks saving up for Christmas.”

“That didn’t stop them from eating in Port St. Joe the other day,” Farrah said as she swooped into the dining room.

Her best friend smiled at them, but ever since she’d come back from her day excursion, Farrah had been distant. Ginny had tried to get whatever secret she was keeping out of her, but her best friend had kept quiet. She had also stopped decorating for Christmas, which relieved Ginny. However, that hadn’t stopped Farrah from rearranging everything in the one small bathroom they all shared—giving everyone their own spots for toothbrushes and makeup. Ginny had been relegated to a small spot to the left of the sink.

Even though Farrah was going through personal issues, they’d need to have a talk sooner or later about their living arrangements.

“Is there any lunch?” Aiden asked.

Ginny smiled. “There’s as much as you’d like.”

She fixed him a plate and talked with him while he ate. “So there are a lot of things that happen this time of year around here,” he told her.

“Oh? What sort of things?”

“Well, the Chamber of Commerce sponsors a dance.”

“Yeah?” She folded her arms and used all her willpower not to grin.
