Laney rested her head against Callum’s shoulder to protect her face from the snow as he carried her from the truck up the slope to her front door. Back in his arms again, the excitement and adrenaline of her body so close to him felt right, normal, and she allowed that feeling to grow.

Why would she fight it now that she was in deep? It was fate – he was her one true love, and she couldn’t turn her back on that, no matter how she’d convinced herself earlier that she could.

He’d been chasing her around all night and had caught her a couple of times, but now she was on the hook, and the feeling wasn’t so bad after all. That didn’t mean she was an easy catch; she still wasn’t at the point of no return, and maybe a little time apart might change her attitude, but she doubted it.

Seeing Callum with her grandfather had melted her heart in a way she couldn’t explain. A lot of guys would take her grandfather at face value and play the young macho card, but he hadn’t – he’d been more than patient and even understanding of where the man was coming from – that had impressed her.

“Home,” he said, and she lifted her gaze. “Unless I made a wrong turn.”

“On a straight street?” she asked, giggling. “You can put me down now,” she said, waiting.

“Not until the door is open; who knows what could happen between now and then,” he said with a cocky grin. “I wouldn’t want you to get swept away by the storm.”

“Good point,” Laney said. “But my keys are in my pocket, and I can’t get to them like this.”

Callum frowned. “You win. I’m not going to freeze you to make a point.”

Callum slowly lowered her to her feet but kept her up close and personal, and as Laney looked up into his eyes, he was bewitched. “I need a little space to get the keys,” she said, chuckling.

Callum’s beast grumbled; neither he nor his bear wanted to break that connection and give her the space she needed. “Are you sure?” he asked with another cocky smile. “Cos this feels right to me.”

“Does it?” Laney asked, giving nothing away about how she felt about it.

“Oh, yeah,” Callum said, resisting the urge to ask her if it also felt right for her. He didn’t want the chance of her saying no and having to rebuild what felt like an easy atmosphere between them.

“Okay,” Laney said with a slight shrug. “But my feet are getting cold.”

Callum stepped back and looked down as his beast roared at him to protect and provide for their mate. In that split second, Laney fished the keys out and hung them on her finger between them. “Ha! Sucker,” she said, turning to the door and pushing the key into the lock.

The door opened, and she reached in and flicked on the lights. Callum felt that connection slipping away and would have done anything to regain it.
