His tiger paced beneath his skin, ready to attack. Just the thought of his woman and son in danger was enough to send his tiger on the defense. A tiger protecting his mate and cub was dangerous. He stared out at the night sky. The snow had finally settled. The dark sky was clear, with a few stars lining the black backdrop.

He could hear Deja moving around in the bedroom of his hotel suite. Her moving to the hotel with him was a big step. Now, if only he could talk her into moving in with him in Cleveland. He knew he was asking much for a human. He would be patient, and once he had taken care of this issue with Tyson, he would take his time. He didn’t want to scare her away.

His ringing cell phone cut through the air. He pulled it out of his jeans and looked down at the glass screen. An unknown number was calling.

The hairs on the back of his neck stood at attention. He swiped the screen to answer it.

“What?” he answered, having no patience for anything at the moment.

“Dixon.”

The rage that had been festering in his gut now rose at the sound of the voice coming through his phone.

“Tyson,” he growled. “What the hell do you want?”

“You know, what I will always want. Your seat on the PLC.”

“It’s not yours to have. You didn’t earn it, nor were you—”

“I hear congratulations are in order, Dixon.”

Dixon fell quiet. His tiger growled low in his chest at what Tyson was hinting at. The way the shifter spoke his name caused his hand to grip his phone tightly. He knew he needed to be careful with his strength. He had been through quite a few phones due to destroying them with his crushing strength.

He closed his eyes and took a few deep breaths. Deja and August were safely tucked away in the other room.

“I don’t know what you’re speaking about.” He would play dumb. He didn’t want to give into the lion’s sneaky way of trying to find out information.

“Oh, don’t play dumb, tiger. You know exactly what I’m talking about. It seems you carelessly planted your seed and it took in a little waitress. I wonder how many other bastards you have running around.”

“You stay away from my family,” he growled into the phone, ignoring the jab. His skin tingled from his tiger rising to the surface, begging to be let out.

“Family? Had you not gone back to that God-awful snow trap, you wouldn’t even have known the waitress had bore your bastard.”

Dixon growled low at the word ‘bastard.’ In the shifter world, marriage wasn’t necessary. A mating, the joining of two souls, was much deeper than two humans signing a piece of paper, promising to be together forever. Humans divorced all the time. Two mates separating was unheard of. A mating was destined by fate.

It was forever.

Hearing August be called a bastard riled his tiger. Calling him that word would signify in the shifter world, an offspring that the father wants nothing to do with.
