Chapter Fifteen
âLizzie!â Casey ran to me, stopping before she took out the tree.
âWhatâs up, dude?â
Ethan scrunched his face. âDude?â
âJust roll with it.â I turned back to Casey. âDo you want some lime sherbet?â
âYouâre giving me wine. Ian, come here!â
He did.
âYouâre fast.â I chuckled. âBut Iâm afraid it was all for nothing. Iâm not giving anyone wine sherbet. Lime.â I spelled it out and then laughed again.
Both agreed to the sherbet sans the wine, and I ruffled the top of Ianâs head. âDid anyone post that to Facebook?â I glanced around, but only Ethan was paying any attention to me.
âYou seem really relaxed. Whatâs wrong?â Ethan asked.
âIâm enjoying the day. Itâs a holiday. Weâre having a party.â I waved my arms in the air. âListen up, partygoers. This is a party. Wipe off your worried expressions. Eat the yummy food. Fill up on eggnog. Gorge on frosted sugar cookies. And letâs sing Christmas carols. Troy, my man, Iâm counting on you to lead us.â I pointed at Roseâs husband.
Everyone stared at me.
âIf you donât start enjoying the day, Iâm taking your gifts away!â I said in a tone that I hoped was teasing.
âDid you get hit in the head?â Helen asked.
âIn a way, yes. Iâve just come to the decision that Iâm not going to let outside forces determine whether or not I can be happy. Iâm almost forty. Who gives a f-fig if the world thinks my children worship Satan? Or that I pay women for sex? Or that I helped Peter murder Tie, because I know some think that? The likes of Keri and her ilk donât have power over me.â I whirled around to Troy. âSeriously, man, letâs start singing.â
He looked to Rose, who gave him an encouraging nod and said, âIâm in agreement with Lizzie. Letâs enjoy the day, right kiddos?â
The kids, Casey and Ian included, clapped their hands, both with light-green foam on their upper lips.
Troy started singing âSanta Claus is Coming to Town.â
Sarah rested her head on my shoulder. âEggnog seems to agree with you.â
âFor the moment. Iâm thinking tomorrow will be an entirely different matter.â I laughed.
âWe canât wreck Christmas morning. For the kidsâ sake.â She handed me her cup. âTry the kiddie punch. Itâs not bad.â
âI love you. And, I would love you boatloads more if you get me some grappa. I promise to drink two Nalgene bottles before bed.â
Sarahâs sigh conveyed she wasnât thrilled to contribute to my drinking, but wasnât willing to argue. She kissed my cheek before heading to the library.
JJ approached. âBravo, Lizzie.â
âFor getting drunk? I would have thought youâd be against that. Since youâre an alcoholic.â
âI wasnât applauding your drinking. Iâm pleased you didnât feed the troll.â
âShe is a devil.â I smiled at Ollie.
JJ shook her head, chuckling. âSometimes, I really canât tell if youâre being serious or not.â
I rubbed my left eye with the heel of my hand. âMe neither these days. Iâm just making it up as I go now. Maybe thatâs the key to happiness. Believing in what Disney movies teach us.
