Superior had each rider duel another for the rest of the day. One-on-one fighting as Sev pointed out their wrongs. While Lynch gave them preferable techniques to use.

Superior left them to train and Lynch had everyone trade partners again. Bullet faced Jorge. Their blades met in the middle before Jorge spoke.

Jorge chuckled and said, “You know, I remember you. Only kid walking alone at night back and forth from the bakery.”

“Bakery? Were you a fat kid, Bullet?” Yuri laughed as he fought Mason beside them. His braid swung back and forth across his back as he moved.

“I worked there, asshat,” Bullet snapped.

Maia charged again at Locke. He sidestepped before losing again to her.

“You’re good at this,” Locke said out of breath. “I need practice. Again.”

She smiled as they took their starting pose. All around, the weapons clashed with every swing.

“Not all of us had parents to take care of us,” Bullet added as he hit the rider’s blade again. “I baked bread all night so they could sell it in the morning. Paid me under the table. I could eat one loaf a night. I slept in their storage closet for years until I could afford a place of my own.”

“You weren’t born here?” Yuri asked him.

“I was eight when I got to the Valley,” he said.

Everyone stopped fighting, lowered their swords, and faced him. Sev continued to circle the group. The riders stared at Bullet in disbelief. It didn’t come as a surprise to Sev. Lots came to the Valley as children. Even himself.

Bullet rolled his eyes. “Oh, now everyone gets sappy on me?”

“No stopping!” Lynch yelled out. “Start over! Beginning stance.”

Lynch switched up the pairs and put Maia with Bullet.

“I’m not fighting her,” Bullet snapped.

“Why not?” She glared. “Didn’t have a problem with your fist. Now that it’s not real, you’re out?”

“I’m not fighting her,” he repeated. Not meeting her eyes, he dropped his sword. Maia moved to stand in front of him.

“Because I’m a girl?” she asked with a scowl. Straightened her back.

“No.” Bullet scoffed.

Sev grabbed a sword from an attendant and nodded to Bullet. He picked his sword up and stood in his ready stance.

“This will be fun,” Sev said.

Maia took a step back and watched as they dueled each other. Ten minutes went by, and still no point had been made. They both dodged and spun and flipped over each other and went around all the other riders. Bullet laughed when Sev tried for his throat. Sev pushed him into the dirt, and Bullet rolled out of his reach. Sev tripped and flung over him before they were back at the starting point.

“Seems we’re a good match, Seventeen. I don’t think your boy is going to like that,” Bullet whispered to him.

Sev glanced at Mason, who seemed to have smoke coming out of his ears. Was he jealous? Mason moved faster. With more intention. Swung harder. On the third strike, he broke his partner’s blade. They stood in silence, staring at each other before an attendant came with new weapons.
