XANTHUS

My hand drifts over to where Jenna should be lying, where her exquisite body should be warming the sheets. Instead, I find a patch of crisp, cold nothing.

From the looks of it, I’ve been alone for a while. When did she leave? Where did she go?

The flames of anger and resentment mar my first moments of waking. She’d better not be wandering around the ship. She’s under strict orders to stay in only her designated spaces.

Can I really keep ordering her around like a captive, though? I don’t know if I have a choice, though. Especially when I feel more that I’ve become a captive of her.

After last night, I don’t know anymore. The memory of it, bright and surreal, floods my mind.

My nakedness seems like an affront right now, with her no longer in my bed. I rise quickly to get dressed. I think about finding Jenna and confronting her.

But what would that accomplish? If she is in her quarters, she’s doing exactly what she’s supposed to. But what I want most of all is to feel that pleasure again, to have her serve me, to provide her with physical ecstasy, not just all night but all day, as well.

I can’t exactly discipline her for leaving my bed without my permission.

I push these thoughts firmly into the back of my mind and finish dressing. Then comes a knock at the door, thankfully once I’m fully clothed.

“What?” I bellow.

Can’t I catch a fucking break?

“It’s Landris,” comes the simple answer from the other side of the door.

I grit my teeth. It has to be serious if Landris is coming to my quarters.

My palm smacks the button to open my door. There he stands, his lanky frame filling the space.

“What, Landris?” I snap my belt buckle into place.

With a heavy-booted step forward and utility belt tools clanking, he fixes me with a serious glare.

“Thought we’d missed the flak but we didn’t.”

Exasperatingly, that’s all he says. “And?” I bark in response.

“There’s damage to the starboard hull. Must have happened when we entered the belt. It’s not terrible but will need repair. Especially if we expect to run into those assholes again.”

An impatient snort shoots through my nose.

“Dammit. Bad?”

“Bad enough.”

“Any sign of Zorin’s fleet?”

Landris’s expression shifts slightly with the raising of his eyebrow. “Gone. The cowards. But they’ll be back. We need to get it repaired. Can’t be relying on asteroid belts and…uh…smart human women to save our asses.”

His eyes flick toward my unmade bed, as if trying to read what happened only a few hours ago. I step into his view to stop whatever lascivious thoughts he might be having.

“I’ll tell Aria. You patch up what you can.”

“Understood,” he replies laconically. Shifting his weight, he looks past my shoulder to the bed once more before turning and leaving my quarters.

I gather myself before I leave. I’m in a foul mood and need to keep my head about me.

I find Aria on the bridge, her eyes scanning her instruments. The jagged, uneven wall of the asteroid we’re using for shelter is pronounced through the bridge windows.
