chapter THIRTY-FIVE

ZYREE

It’s hard to loiter outside any building in New York City in the modern age without attracting attention. This is one of the most monitored metropolises in the world, and a mountain of computers run programs designed to track every soul living and working here. Most major cities across the globe employ these measures, but of those I’ve been to, only London, Paris, Washington, and Moscow even come close to the level of surveillance here.

What makes this even more challenging is where I’m standing. The area around One Guardian Plaza is crawling with uniformed members of the PSS as they come and go, especially at seven in the morning when shifts are beginning to change. It’s not the smartest place to try to look inconspicuous.

I expected to see my target making his way into work. I never would have guessed I’d spot him on the way out of the building. It makes what I’m about to do far simpler than I thought it would be.

Attempting to blend with corporate employees on their way to their offices, I follow him down the street and around the corner to the left. He disappears into a small deli advertising some tantalizing breakfast specials. He passed at least a half dozen places closer to his headquarters, so either he really likes the coffee here, or he needed to get out of the office and stretch his legs a while longer. I’m guessing it’s the latter. I know if I had a son cavorting with a known terrorist group, I would want to get away too.

I’m tempted to confront him here, but if it’s a place he frequents, it would be better if I wasn’t spotted with him. He exits the shop with a coffee in hand and makes another left, continuing away from headquarters. I trail him down the block and lose him for a moment as he turns down a side street. Not wanting him to be out of sight for too long, I speed up and peer around the corner. Damn. He’s gone.

I scan the sidewalk on the other side of the street. Failing to see him, I pick up my pace while still attempting to appear like I’m on a stroll. Despite the Intercorpex security uniform not blending in with corporate professional attire, I have a knack for being invisible. The sparse population of this street is making that increasingly difficult.

He has to have ducked into another shop. I continue down the street, scanning the entrance to each business as I pass. I’m startled as two hands grab me from behind and shove me inside the bakery I just passed. The female clerk behind the counter shrieks as Teman clamps onto my uniform jacket and uses the leverage to shove me against the front wall. Running on adrenaline and instinct, my fists crash down on both his arms, breaking the grip he has me.
