Chapter 5 – American-Indian Wars East of the Mississippi after the American Revolutionary War Part 2: The Cherokee-American Wars

The Northwest Indian War wasn’t the only major American Indian war in the 18th century—the Cherokee-American Wars in the Southeast started during the American Revolutionary War in 1776 and also ended the same year as the Northwest Indian War. Though it started during the American Revolution, the backdrop of this major American Indian war reaches further back to the French and Indian War between the British and French colonies and their Native American allies. The Cherokee had always shown a tendency of switching sides between the French and the British every now and then; they would ally themselves to whichever side appealed to their interests. Between 1758 and 1761 the Anglo-Cherokee War was fought, which saw the British pitted against the Cherokee who were backed by the French. The Cherokee were easily beaten by the British within a few years, mostly due to the chiefs of the Cherokee nation being divided about going to war against the British. After being defeated, the Cherokee nation signed two peace treaties with the British—the Treaty of Long-Island-on-the-Holston in 1761 and the Treaty of Charlestown in 1762 with Virginia and South Carolina, respectively. The Cherokee’s loss of the Anglo-Cherokee War also saw the rise of Attakullakulla as the principal chief of the Cherokee, replacing Conocotocko, the previous principal chief.
