Chapter 35

It was all Jack could do to keep Leon from selling Amy’s truck. Leon took away her rifle and grounded her for a month. And instead of selling the truck, he wouldn’t allow Amy to get her driver’s license until after the first of the year. Jack was right; Leon was uncharacteristically angry.

Amy took it all in stride. She felt bad about disappointing her daddy. So, she didn’t put up a fuss when it came to her punishment. She knew she screwed up and decided to focus on other things. She still got to go down to the barn and workout. Carol was easy to be around, which was good. Amy learned how to cook Italian food from her. While killing some time at home, she also got hooked on the television show Dawson’s Creek, which was all the rage with the other girls at school.

Amy started to open up and talk to the group of girls that Mary Beth used to hang around with. They were not as shallow and dumb as she thought they would be. She should have known better. Mary Beth always had good taste in friends.

One day after weight lifting, Amy walked out to the pool, leaned up against the wall, and watched the beginning of swim practice. It looked like fun and for the first time she thought about participating in a sport. The next day she went to Coach Hixon’s office and knocked on the door.

“Hi, Coach.”

Coach Hixon had a look of surprise. “Amy, hi. What can I do for you?”

“When we were down at the river on my birthday, you said you would be interested in having me on the team. Were you serious?”

It was everything the coach could do to contain himself. He swallowed hard and said, “Well, the season has already started, but I think I could find a place for you.”

“When’s practice?”

“You start as early as you can get here before school. You get your laps in and then practice a couple of hours or so after school. But, ah, we can be flexible.”

“Sounds good, let me talk to my daddy and I’ll get back to you.”

“I can arrange transportation. I’ll come get you myself and we can make this work.”

“I’ll let you know tomorrow. Thanks, Coach.”

Amy left and shut the door. The Coach got out of his chair and did a happy dance and thought I’m gonna be in Sports Illustrated.

Later that evening Amy went home and talked to her daddy. Leon talked about the commitment to the team and how it would take up much of her free time. In the end, he told her he would support whatever decision she made. Amy sought advice from several sources before she made a big decision. Uncle Jack would most certainly have an opinion.

“Oh, hell yes. As a SEAL we did ocean swims every day. It’s some of the best exercise you can do. It will do nothing but help you.”

“What about us? What about our work?”

“We will make time for that.
