Luckier. I can’t help thinking that so much of my family’s Christianity was based on fear—fear of death and the possibility of hell. One had to be good or else. It is obviously a strong incentive. But in the end, it feels impure, even childish. One isn’t acting justly because that impulse comes from somewhere within. Rather, like a child, one does the right thing only out of fear of the repercussions of acting otherwise. But what if the promise of heaven and the prospect of hell were gone? With it would go the burden of guilt that bore down so hard on my father. What would remain? Perhaps a more affirmative and truly just religion that looks far more like the gospel of Thomas Jefferson and the poetry of Walt Whitman.
