Chapter 17: Mary

Mary knew something bad had happened. It didn’t take a genius to work it out, to be fair. Walker had turned up at her house with an ice pack on his jaw and a furious expression on his face.

“Bernie Paterson!” He huffed as he walked in through Mary’s front door.

“Oh god, she didn’t hit you, did she?”

“Might as well have.” Walker sat down on the sofa. This was a mistake as he was immediately surrounded by small children.

“What happened to your face?”

“Was it a crimininiminal?”

“Can I poke it?”

“Off to your rooms,” Mary said, tugging the kids off the unlucky man. “If you stay up there and keep quiet for half an hour you can watch Dirty Dancing before bed.”

Happy to accept the bribe the kids ran upstairs, leaving them alone.

“Is that film age appropriate?” Walker asked, settling into a more comfortable position on the sofa.

“They only get to see the dancing bits. I fast forward the sex.” Mary sat down beside him. “Your jaw doesn’t look too bad,” she said, placing her hand on his cheek.

“Oh, I know that. I’m just trying to keep the swelling down so that the lads at the station don’t take the Mickey any more than they have already.”

Walker explained exactly what had happened.

“I can’t believe Mr Biggins had it in him,” Mary said. “But I don’t see how you can blame Bernie.”

“Apparently she was telling him something about losing face to the big bad police officer. So then when I told him not to play any more silly beggars he ‘saw red’. He was very apologetic afterwards.”

“Are you going to press charges?”

“He’ll get a caution. And a right good telling-off. As for Bernie Paterson, I’m working my way through the police handbook and I’m sure I’m going to find something to charge her with.”

“I’m sure she didn’t mean to do anything.”

Walker gave raised an eyebrow.

“Well, maybe eighty per cent sure.”

“She’s decided to take the Abbey case on I see,” he said.

Mary looked down at the floor. There was a raisin flattened into the carpet. “We both have. I mean, I was there when it happened.”

“I remember.”

She waited for him to get to the point. One of the things that she liked about her boyfriend was that he didn’t waste his words, but it meant that at that moment Mary felt like she was in court awaiting a verdict.

“Macleod isn’t too happy about the WWC being involved.”

“Because we’ve solved a case for him before?” Mary couldn’t help but smile. “Maybe he’s scared of the competition.”

“I don’t think he’s petty like that. He just wants things done right.”

“And we won’t do it right?”

Walker breathed out a long sigh. “Why does this feel like a fight that neither of us can win?”

Mary leaned back against his arm. “You’re right about that.”

“So can we just agree to put it to one side for the moment?”

Was it just putting off an inevitable fallout? Possibly, but Mary was happy enough to go along with it while she was cuddled into his broad chest, her eyes half-closed already.
