The Italian physicist Alessandro Volta was the first to invent a functional electrical battery – a discovery that helped to usher in a new age of research into electrical phenomena. Working at the turn of the 19th century, Volta was intrigued by the concept of ‘animal electricity’. In the 1790s, another Italian scientist, Luigi Galvani, had observed that movement could be triggered in the legs of a recently dead frog if the nerves were connected to two different metals.
