Standing at the foot of a two-hundred-year-old ponderosa towering above us, I bow. Each successive bow takes me deeper, closer.

At first I bow to the greatness of the tree, but by the time the next bow slowly evolves, I find I am bowing to the forest in which the tree and I both stand, and next bow is to all the beings in this forest which stretches for hundreds of miles well up into Colorado. And then, seeing a bit more, I bow to that quality that melds us all into that which we label “nature.” The Ocean of Being is distributed out through nature’s nerve currents as the life force pulsing at the heart of the ponderosa and in the heart of that which bows before it. We share the body of the planet, which floats like a whale in the forest, calling from ocean to ocean from here in the midst of all forests, all oceans resonating with the yearning, the longings of the soul-fire which lights the way of all sentient beings, all that dream or are about to dream, all that hope or have forgotten hope, all those who look and find all that they see “loveable.” Of course, one might hear the above and feel that only a saint might see all things “as lovable,” and that may be true, but one does not have to be a saint to make the seeing of beauty in such a remarkable manner their kind intention. And the bowing completes itself in the same silence in which it began, except for the coupling of the stars.
