A somewhat similar case involved a horse named Maxwell. His people had a problem with his riding stiffly and his resistance to turning, particularly to the left. He told me that his neck and back hurt from an old injury that occurred in a trailer, and his training made him respond to riding by tensing his muscles. I worked gently with his body, helping him to notice where he was holding tension and pain. As I worked with him, I asked him to release these muscles, and he visibly relaxed. He showed me, with mental images, how he tensed his body while he was being ridden, and that he had certain habits that made riding uncomfortable. I encouraged his people to gently touch him before they rode and to remind him to release his habitual tensing while they were riding him.

Besides noting Maxwell’s evident acceptance of my directions as I worked on him, the people were delighted with how he responded to their offering advice to him as they rode. When he was reminded to release his neck or back, he would noticeably relax and change his old habits, and riding became smoother and more pleasurable. In a few weeks, after having been stiff and tense for years, Maxwell looked like a new horse. The direct communication enlisting his help and understanding enhanced the effectiveness of the bodywork.
