A Fountain of Fonts
Just as Times New Roman doesn’t look quite the same as Arial or Helvetica, a variety of both online and publishing fonts are used for the Arabic language. In this book, I have selected Markazi for you to use as the basis for your practice in writing. Markazi matches very nicely the types of strokes and loops that traditionally handwritten Arabic uses. Even so, I would like to show you some of the different fonts you may encounter as you begin reading Arabic. Look at the Arabic word for Arabic as it appears in a variety of fonts:
