CHAPTER 16

PREPARATIONS

The core that Kora gave me lacked a certain feeling and brilliance that hers had when I’d held it, but nonetheless, I trusted her word that it was going to be useful. I held it out in front of me wondering if I should just get the transfer going so that I could get a sense for how much essence there was. I decided to probe it first with my ability and get a sense of the scope of essence before transferring it to the blade directly. What I found surprised me, several million, at least three, waited inside. This was enough to make a real difference.

I fed the essence of the dungeon core into the Sword of the Ordu and something marvelous happened. The sword flickered to full strength while the energy flowed into it. Runes blazed and the feeling of absolute power returned. Sitting where I was, alone in my room, I felt the need to move, to act, but I squashed it with great effort. Something about the dungeon core essence was kicking the sword into overdrive and it became clear what I needed if I wanted to be a match for this Chaos Knight.

This essence did indeed feel different as well. It was an immense amount, but it was more than that. Where the essence I’d given to it before had been taken by the sword, none had reacted so strongly with it. Almost as if they were similar creations and the transfer was the most natural thing ever. Could the sword and dungeon cores have something in common? They were both said to be created by the Ordu, but that couldn’t be the end of the similarities.

The core cracked and shattered, turning to dust when the final transfer was complete some hours later. I collected the dust, knowing it too was a powerful reagent that I could either sell or keep for experiments of my own. My thoughts drifted back to dungeons and how I could possibly get more of this power.

Dungeons had reached out to me before, but I wondered if I’d be able to get more to do so or if just taking in the essence of the dungeon while inside it would be enough to get the same effect. I hadn’t been inside of a dungeon since getting the sword, but I felt confident in my new plan. I would go and do as many dungeons as it took to empower the sword and make ready to face my enemy.

I found Emory just outside my main room playing cards with the guards.

“Time for a bit of fun,” I told him, and he gave me his signature grin in return.

Before asking what I meant, he said, “I’m in.”

I gathered together, Kora, Emory, Alayna, and Ismene, promising them drinks and a fun night so that I could discuss what I needed.

“The plan is simple,” I said, looking at each of them in turn. “I need to run a few dungeons and get a feel for how much dungeon essence I can pull into the sword.
