Chapter Eight

Clutching her handbag, Jackie took one last look around Jane's bedroom before closing the door. Creeping downstairs she could hear the low drone of David and Tim talking in the lounge - but thankfully, not what they were saying. She didn't want to know what terrible fate Tim the doctor was devising for her, what awesome devices he planned to employ to plunder her holes. She'd had more than enough, she decided, as she quietly closed the front door on her debauched world to slip into the cold reality of the street.

Gazing at the pub, she wasn't sure what to do or where to go. She'd made no plans, other than to escape and leave David, Jane and the doctor to their perversions. 'I'm a wanted criminal,' she whispered to herself as she wandered along the snow-covered pavement, pulling the collar of Jane's fur coat over her face.

A bus pulled up alongside her, distracting her thoughts. As the doors opened she impulsively leapt aboard. The driver gave her a blank look as she pulled a five-pound note from her bag and held it out to him.

'Where to, love?' he eventually asked.

Spontaneously, she didn't know why, the words tumbled from her mouth. 'Grantham Wood, please.'

'I don't go there. The nearest stop is a mile or so away, if you don't mind the walk.'

'No, I don't mind,' she smiled as he took the note.

Taking her seat, she suddenly remembered the origin of her unknown destination. 'Lady Stockwell!' she gasped, gazing at the pale, vacant faces of her fellow travellers and wondering if they'd recognise her as a woman on the run.

The bus stopped alongside a common and the driver called out to her. 'This is as far as I can take you, love - walk straight across the common and you'll come to Grantham Wood.'

Thanking him as she stepped out into the cold country air, Jackie gazed across the snow-covered landscape stretched out before her. 'A mile or so,' she sighed as she began to tread her way through the snow, wondering why on earth she was going to Grantham Wood. Following several pairs of footprints, the walk took far less time than she'd imagined, bringing her into a small lane where the only sign of civilisation was a post office.

'And what would you be wanting with Lady Stockwell?' the old woman behind the counter asked suspiciously.

'Lord Stockwell - Terry, her late husband - is... was, my uncle,' she lied unconvincingly. But the woman smiled sweetly, pointing in the direction of Stockwell Manor.

The wind had got up, chilling further her already cold legs as she walked up the lane, huddling in Jane's short fur coat. The small village seemed to be deserted - a ghost town, she thought, as she passed an old church. If the nuns could see me now, she reflected, they'd probably cast me into the fires of hell as the devil's daughter!

A large pair of wrought iron gates came into view as she rounded a draughty corner.
