Well, A Girl can Dream!

Iwoke up around 10 in the morning the next day and panicked that I was not home. Then I remembered where I was, but I was supposed to be with my children. I called Dhruv from bed and informed him that I was in Shlok’s spare bedroom.

He was relieved to know that because most of the Delhi was submerged in knee deep water and while he had tried to find a route to come to office to pick me up, he was unable to find one.

“Is it?” I blanched as I walked up to the balcony to look outside, and true enough, from the height of seven floors, where Shlok’s apartment was located, I could see water everywhere. I looked down at the gardens of the society and saw kids playing in water. The society apparently was much above the road level and the society at least was not flooding.

“What do I do?” I asked, panicking.

“Stay there, I do not want you to be stuck in rains and flood, okay,” Dhruv ordered.

“Are kids okay?” I asked. “And what about food for them?”

“Neha offered to cook for them,” Dhruv informed. Neha was our downstairs neighbour, and her son was Shiv’s good friend. And we often traded favours as both Neha and I were working women and supported each other.

“Oh, thank God,” I sighed.

“Or I would have cooked for them,” Dhruv spoke indignantly.

“Yes, your famous poori sabji,” I mocked. Dhruv was an excellent cook, but he could never cook chapatis. So, whenever he did cook, he made pooris as you can never go wrong with deep frying anything.

“Yes,” and he beamed with pride.

“Tell kids I will see them soon,” I requested, and he agreed. I deliberately did not talk to them as I did not wish to upset them. Ojha, for sure, would have started crying on hearing my voice. And then we disconnected.

Firing up the Uber app and putting in the drop location, I went to freshen up. And when I came back, my jaw dropped. The fare that came up was three fucking thousand! And the time shown was seven hours… the roads must be horribly clogged, because I lived almost two hours away from here in normal traffic!

Sighing, I stepped out of the room, but could not find Shlok anywhere. I could hear music coming out of the third room which had been locked before, so I knocked on the door.

The music stopped and he stepped out.

“Your hidey hole in there?” I mocked.

“Umm,” sheepishly he opened the door and my jaw dropped. It was a gaming room, with a massive TV and a PlayStation hooked to it. “I do not allow anyone in here, and keep it locked when I have visitors.”

“Okay!” I spoke as I scanned the collection of games that lined the wall along with so many photographs from his life. The wall opposite to it had a bookshelf with at least two dozen books. The photographs intrigued me, so I looked at
