Chapter 8
Tasha
Standing at the door, I rushed out as soon as the dealership driver pulled up to the main gate. The guard approached the tow truck driver and they spoke, then the driver climbed out of the cab of the truck and lowered the back of the flatbed holding my new car.
I quietly closed the front door behind me and headed out to the main gate, glad the guards hadnât let them enter the grounds. All I needed was for Mark to wake up while the dealership was delivering my car. Although I hated leaving like a thief in the night, Mark wouldnât let me go otherwise.
This was the only way.
âSo, the man says you ordered this car?â the guard asked, his eyebrows raised.
I nodded. âYes, itâs mine.â I handed the driver a wad of cash. âThanks for bringing it right away, as I asked.â
He looked down at the cash, and his eyes lit up. âItâs no problem at all, lady! Iâm glad to do it!â He pointed toward the car as he looked between the guard and me. âIâll... Iâll justââ
âThank you.â I gave him a reassuring smile.
âAre you sure you want to do this?â the guard asked, his eyes filled with concern. âMaybe I should tell Markââ
âNo,â I quickly cut him off. âPlease. As a favor to me, donât tell him Iâm gone until the morning.â
He arched an eyebrow. âAre you sure you want to do that? Itâs dangerous outââ
âIâm sure.â I gave him a reassuring smile. âDonât worry. I can handle myself.â
âThatâs what they all say.â He rolled his eyes. âJust promise me that you wonât get yourself killed. Markâll kill me if he knew I let you go like this.â
âJust tell him that I left without you seeing me.â
He looked at me in disbelief, one corner of his lips curling into a smile. âNothing goes on without me or one of the other guards knowing about it. Not since the attack.â
The attack, as they called it, was the incident that had claimed Marieâs life. Even though Lucian talked a big game, I was sure heâd never get over the death of his wife. According to Mark, they had been married since the Stone Age. I wasnât sure if heâd ever had mistresses or not, but it wasnât my business. But from what I heard, it was common practice to have mistresses in the Mafia. I never wanted to find out.
I looked down at the ring that had belonged to my mother. The same ring Mark had just given to me. But if he was hellbent on joining the Mafia again, then it was over. I took off the ring and slipped it into my pocket, vowing to put it away later.
âWell, here you go, miss!â The driver dropped the key into my hand, and I quickly put it on my keyring before I changed my mind. âIs there anything else you need before I go?â
âSheâs fine.â The same guard stepped up beside me, folding his hands in front of him.
