Chapter Twenty

From the darkest depths of her mind, rising ever so slowly but unmistakably, the flashing red alert appeared. It started with a pulse of light, like the emergency lamp they had in the lab. Soon, the red flashing would be accompanied by a loudly blaring klaxon, the kind that was impossible to ignore.

Yet, Amelia kept touching her lips against Jill’s. Maybe, this time, she could outlast the red alert in her head. Maybe even outsmart it. Or, perhaps, even out-kiss it? Because she had instigated this kiss. She had asked for it. By god, had she wanted it. So, that annoying, intrusive alarm was to be ignored at all costs. Amelia didn’t want this kiss to stop. Jill’s lips felt so soft and right against hers. When Jill pulled her closer, Amelia felt it in the pit of her stomach. Although she couldn’t be sure if it was a ball of dread dissolving or growing tighter. Amelia had lost the ability to be so in touch with her feelings she could easily name them. This wretched burnout had made her mistake her emotions for other things before. And that was the biggest problem. Amelia couldn’t trust her gut any longer. She no longer knew how to tap into her intuition and, on the worst days, she could hardly remember the kind of person she had been before.

One thing Amelia did know for certain was that she shouldn’t be in her head the way she was at that very moment. She could hear Jill’s breathing picking up speed. She grabbed for her with more insistence. While Amelia knew very well how it felt to turn on the tap of pent-up lust, right now hers could only let out a tiny trickle. She suspected that for Jill it might be more like a newly breached dam. Oh, for crying out loud. What was she even thinking about? But it was too late. Amelia was lost in her head. Once again, a victim of her incessant thoughts. Even kissing another woman was no match for this worry spiral she was about to plunge into. Of course, she should have known. But the evening with Jill had been so wonderful—apart from Jill’s hand falling victim to Amelia’s clumsiness—because Jill was such a lovely person. She’d been more relaxed than Amelia had ever seen her. She’d flirted. She batted her lashes at the right time. She’d made something inside Amelia’s chest flutter. And then, Amelia had kissed her. Because she had wanted to. The sensation of wanting to kiss Jill along with the very real option of simply doing it had left her a little intoxicated—that and the liquor.

And now what? Jill’s hands were in Amelia’s hair. Her lips drifted to her cheek, down her neck. All the while, that damned red light pulsed in her
