The acid inside Kelly’s stomach danced up his oesophagus, causing a fire to rage through his gut. It was probably all the coffee, he thought. He was definitely drinking more coffee now that Louise was living with him.

‘You need to get that seen to.’ Louise was munching into her Caesar-salad bagel at her desk as she spoke. She had seen how many antacids he took on a daily basis. ‘I’m telling you, you have to have an ulcer.’ Her tone was serious.

It was lunchtime but indigestion had turned Kelly off the chicken-salad bagel Louise had grabbed in the deli on their way back to the station from Riverside. He riffled through his desk drawer, pushing aside a collection of half-chewed pens, a stapler that he could never find and a plastic wrapped Post-it pad that he would never use, looking for antacids. He pierced the packet when he eventually found it and lobbed a chewy tablet in his mouth.

‘You’ve said…’ He was still mulling over everything in his head. Some of what Mike had said didn’t add up. ‘Were you able to see Heather’s face from the window?’

‘Not really. By the time I got to the front window of Riverside, Heather was already on her way to the car. Mike was talking on his own to you. Like I said, I don’t know if I’d even recognise Heather if I saw her.’

‘Right so.’

‘I was just talking to the lads inside.’ Louise lowered her voice to a whisper. The Detective floor was empty but for the two of them; the rest of the lads were in the break room eating lunch.

‘Yeah?’

‘Well, the rumour is that McCarthy has suspended Mike.’ There was a look of glee on Louise’s face. ‘Lads reckon it’s over the Sam Flynn case. GSOC are involved, an official complaint by Mammy Flynn.’

‘Really.’ Kelly smiled. He loved the way Louise worked. She had a way of finding out even the most protected information. ‘Mike did mention the Sam Flynn thing all right.’ He looked over Louise’s shoulder before he continued. ‘He half suggested that maybe it might have been a bit of a revenge attack, or maybe a warning?’ Kelly’s attention to detail was meticulous and his eye for form and pattern unrivalled. He had retrieved Sam Flynn’s file and intended on finding something that would satisfy his curiosity either way.

‘So no more Mike Martin for a while, yay,’ Louise grinned.

‘Right, I’m going to look into his revenge theory and see where we get from there,’ Kelly said.

Louise nodded, biting another mouthful of her bagel. She sat in silence, eating at her desk while Kelly worked behind her.

‘Right, Sam Flynn, let’s be having you.’ Kelly spoke to himself, opening up the file. He had pulled it out when Louise went to make coffee to go with her lunch as soon as they returned. ‘Why did Mike think that you could have done this?’ He began to read.

The way he spoke to himself when he worked made Louise smile.

The photograph that was pinned to the right-hand corner of the file confirmed he had the right one.
