I barely got back to the hotel room that night on time and managed to squeeze in six hours of sleep—really good—before Tae-X’s alarm went off and woke me up. It was now Sunday, June 11th, the day before our second concert, though that didn’t stop us from filming today. The rehearsal and then the concert would be part of the TV show—the end of our long, successful, and flatteringly edited week.

I skipped breakfast. I’d been really good about keeping the diet, until that fateful night of ice cream with Leyla, which had of course been followed by a brownie and now the hometown food we’d eaten last night. Every single time I’d met her I’d eaten food that wasn’t JNP-approved. Maybe it was because being with her felt like freedom.

But it was a fleeting freedom. I couldn’t keep eating in secret and not pay the consequences.

So I turned down the smoothie, even though my stomach growled. I smiled and laughed and joked so that even Seojung wasn’t suspicious, and he was hard to fool.

We were all out on the beach at dawn. I stood on the sand and looked out at the endless horizon, chilly air playing with my hair and bringing some life to my lungs. I would be glad when the makeup artist finished up with Laon and moved on to me, because I looked more exhausted than ever. When I’d woken up this morning and glanced in the mirror, I’d thought of a vampire. My skin was unusually pale and the shadows under my eyes were worse than ever. Maybe if JNP had given us one day to breathe and recover, I would’ve been better, but after two years of this I was way beyond burned-out. I wasn’t even sure I remembered how it felt to be normal.

Leyla made me feel normal....

I sucked in a breath, looking out at the golden sun just breaking over the horizon.

I turned around when I heard the click of a camera. Sun Chi-Ho was next to me, holding his phone, no doubt taking pictures of everything.

“Sorry, I didn’t mean to disturb you,” he said, eyes wide.

I smiled. “Oh, you didn’t!” I said buoyantly. “How are your pictures turning out?”

Sun Chi-Ho looked down at his screen. “I’m not sure yet. I’m trying to figure out how to tell a story in the photo.”

“You want me to look at it?”

“Oh, that’s okay,” he said, looking embarrassed and uncomfortable. “I’ll probably show you later.”

I laughed. “Ok, then. I look forward to it.”

The makeup artist finally made it around to me, and Sun Chi-Ho ran off—ever the little brother of Tr3sure.

Though more distractions continued to pelt at me throughout the busy hours, my thoughts kept returning to one thing. All day there was an internal battle ripping me apart.

After last night, I had to come to grips with my own feelings. About Leyla.

When I’d first spotted her last night on the balcony I couldn’t even breathe. Her presence hit me like a sack of bricks.
