The West Maui mountains and the mountain of Haleakala cover most of Maui. Haleakala rises to 10,000 ft. Hiking here, especially at sunrise, is more of an "encounter" than a sport. Visitors enjoy wandering along the "road to Hana," a remote town on the windward side of Haleakala, passing bamboo forests, waterfalls and gardens of wild fruits and flowers. On the northwest side of Maui you can explore Lahaina, an old whaling village. Lahaina Harbor bustles with yachts from all over the world.

Maui County offers a variety of diving and snorkeling sites. It is also a jumping-off point for dive tours to the islands of Lanai, Molokai and Molokini Cr ater. at these out-island dive sites, you'll see creatures rarely seen elsewhere, docile 50-foot whale sharks and, during the winter months, humpback whales. Dive and snorkel operations are concentr ated in the main resort areas of Wailea/Kihei and Lahaina. Side trips to Molokini and other nearby sites take 15 to 30 minutes; trips across the channel to Lanai and Molokai can take 1½ hours.
