Chapter 33
Charley took a deep breath and combed his fingers through his hair in frustration. âSo he wrote this so that his story is told but nobody can understand it.â
âNo,â Mac clarified. âSo that the bad guys canât understand it. He also says that most people will think itâs a bunch of baloney.â
âA hoax.â
Mac nodded, reluctantly. âBut that somebody might, eventually, be able toââshe leaned over the manuscript to find the right wordsââdiscern and discover the truth.â She looked up at Charley and flashed a cheesy smile as an exclamation point.
âOnly if YOU areââhe emphasized the word you as he, mirroring her, leaned over the manuscript to read the exact wordsââfamiliar with the Art of Love.â He looked back up and mimicked her cheesy smile. âWell? Are you?â
Catching the double meaning, she could feel the blush creeping up her face. âNo!â she exclaimed a little too fast then tried to make up for it. âI mean, I could be. Are you?â
âToo late,â he whispered then smiled what she thought of as a Cheshire Cat smile.
Bill came to her rescue. âDoes the Art of Love have anything to do with Mayan legends?â
Obie shook his head, obviously lost.
Jack filled the silence. âIt also says you have to piskâ, ah, piskââ He struggled with the pronunciation.
âPiskâalij.â Peter came to his rescue, and to theirs, Mac suspected, before Jack could turn the word into something embarrassing for all of them. âSo somebody can become Etaâmanel.â He looked up. âWhat does that mean?â
âPiskâalij means âto turn inside out.â Etaâmanel refers to a sage, or someone who understands,â Obie explained.
Peter nodded. âOkay, so we need to turn something inside out in order to understand?â
âAnd Naâwikil?â Billâs voice rumbled softly.
âCleverness. To be clever. One who is clever.â
Billâs eyes narrowed in thought, and Peterâs gaze seemed to be caught on the other side of the room, so it was Charley who summarized. âSo we need to understand the Art of Love; we need to turn it inside out and be clever about it.â He turned to Mac with a grin. âIt sounds just like surviving a party in a singles ward.â
A part of Mac was irritated at Charleyâs previous comment about her and the Art of Love, and she resented his distraction from the problem at hand. But despite herself, she couldnât repress a small snort at his unlikely comparison. Refusing to give him any more encouragement, she turned away. It was then she noticed the odd expression on Billâs face. âWhat is it, Bill?â
Slowly Billâs eyes turned and focused on her. âIâm gonna regret this.â
Mac frowned, not understanding. âWhat?â
Bill took a deep breath as though preparing for something painful. âAs you all know, I donât have much formal education like Obie and Peter or the two of you.â He nodded toward Mac and Charley. âBut I read a lotâmostly philosophy but some other stuff too.â
Mac shrugged, still trying to understand where Bill was going. âSo?â
âSomething I read about once, oh, a year or so ago. About spying or the history of spying or something like that.
