Chapter 33

Chosen. The word hung in the air.

What did it mean? Was he ordered to choose me? Was it against his will? He’d all but told me it was. I shook off his hands, not wanting him touching me for the rest of this conversation.

“Do you want me as your chosen?” I asked carefully.

His eyes closed again and when they opened, they were onyx without a hint of flame and I wasn’t sure how he felt.

“Our joining is foretold. We can’t fight it.”

He hadn’t answered the question which I guessed, in its own way, was an answer.

“If I choose to leave here, will you allow it now that I have my power?”

“I ask that you give us both time. I’ve been resentful for years and fought the prophecy. I no longer what to fight it, but I want to explore this as equals.”

“How can we be equals if I am your prisoner?”

“The werewolves want you. You need my protection.” He hesitated. “I will make a pact with you. If you swear on your honor that you will remain for three months, I will not hold you prisoner.”

I huffed a laugh.

“My honor will hold me prisoner. What happens at the end of three months?”

“Renegotiation,” he said with a soft smile.

I was about to find out if I could trust a vampire.

A wave of tiredness engulfed me. My body ached and the bursts of energy changed from electrifying to draining.

“The plants will help,” Blade said. “Hax has moved some into your bedroom while we’ve been out here.”

“It bothers me that you can read my mind,” I told him.

“You can also read mine if you try. I will teach you to block your thoughts. I have this connection to my vampires. Learning will tire you and you’re not ready. Food and sleep in that order are what you require. I will escort you back to your room.”

I was suddenly too exhausted to argue. He took my hand again which was a good thing because I stumbled after walking a few feet.

“It will go away,” he said.

“Who will teach me about my power?” I asked.

“Hax has shared little of his wielder knowledge, but he’s sworn to you now. Once your magic settles, ask him for help.”

“I want to learn about vampires too.” Before he spoke, I continued. “You are not what I was led to believe. I want to understand.”

His expression changed and I didn’t like what I saw.

“We are everything you’ve heard,” he whispered harshly. I pictured him killing Kenia and I shivered. “Never forget it.”

His voice, besides being harsh, sounded odd. I had the strangest feeling he didn’t like vampires which meant he didn’t like himself. I’d been told they were monsters, but then again, I was told anything supernatural was a monster.

I turned when we reached my door and I went to my tiptoes. Leaning in, I gave Blade a soft kiss.

The flames in his eyes had dulled but they came back to life. With a soft growl, he pulled me closer and his mouth took mine in a brutal kiss.
