"It is true Kiel is young," Sarreth said. "But he is no small

knife to be ignored. He stands to gain our Bloodsworn's Outer

Decca soon, the youngest Blade to do so. I, on the other

hand, have been a Blade for many years. As many as you, I

would guess. I have seen some of the atrocities visited on

others by those of the black sword, Cu-Laurian. I doubt

anything you have seen would surprise me."

Bracca shrugged one shoulder. "Perhaps. It is possible you

have even seen the results of a sundered link. But have you

watched a man die whose only fault was in doing the bidding

of his heart instead of that of his Bloodsworn?"

His words made Avera feel sick to her stomach. "These

Bloodsworn really do that? They just cut off anyone who

doesn't obey them? Anyone who loses his sword? Without

even trying to find out why? That's just wrong."

"Breaking a link to a captured Blade is a common

practice."

She sat back, waving a hand in a sharp gesture even

though he couldn't see her. "Well I for one think it stinks. I

don't believe in leaving someone to die who has risked their

life for you." That wasn't how she was raised. Marines didn't

abandon their own.

Bracca's lips twitched again, the ends turning up into a

faint smile. When he spoke, his voice sounded wistful. "You

are different from other Bloodsworn in so many ways."

" Other Bloodsworn? What do you mean by other?"

Fate's voice broke in, as firm and implacable as a rock. "Do

not let him confuse you, Lady St. John. Females are not

capable of being Bloodsworn."
