I found the door to the car ramp off the hallway, then went down it as fast as I was able, almost falling down a few times in the process. I finally made it to the bottom, where a garage gate was the only remaining thing standing between me and the street. I spotted a button on the wall you could use to open the gate from the inside and punched it. The gate went up and I went out.

From there, I kept moving -- just not too well.

I didn’t know how long it would be until Veronica got to her feet and alerted the troops in the area, so I pushed myself onward, not even taking the time to fish the phone out of my pants pocket and call for some kind of help. That kind of delay could be fatal. I just kept moving forward down the street. I might have looked drunk, or homeless, but, hey, this was New York City and at this hour of the night, I just looked normal. Anyway, the streets were pretty deserted. It must have been after midnight, because I didn’t even see a cab I could try to hail.

Wherever I was, I was close to the water, because I could see my island, the northern tip of it, in the moonlit distance over the East River, which seemed as if it was just a block or two away. That meant they had taken me to the Upper East Side. I spotted a massive park overlooking the river, a park that had tennis and basketball courts, a playground, and acres of grass and trees. This was where the well-to-do Upper East Siders came out and played during the day and, as usual, the city had provided them with the best of everything. For me, it would serve as a hiding place until morning.

I knew I didn’t have much more in me. The drugs were still pushing me to collapse and my resistance was running on empty. I was shivering from the late February cold and sweating buckets at the same time, because my system was completely screwed up, so screwed up I wouldn’t have been surprised to see piss come out of my nose. But my body didn’t care about hot or cold or comfortable or hard cement. It just wanted to crash and it wanted to crash now.

I stumbled my way through the park’s idea of a forest and found an out-of-the-way corner, where I put myself between the back of a big oak tree and a small cement wall that held back a slightly elevated playground area.

Then and only then did I pull my phone out of my pants pocket.

I messaged PMA, told him I wasn’t sure where I was but I was in deep trouble. A big park, Upper East Side, near the water was all I knew about my location. I pressed the “Send” button and let myself go under. It was a relief, but, at the same time, it was terrifying to fall back into the blackness.
