Chapter 14

Jonathan stared Abbie down across the living room in his hotel suite. They were both standing—she refused to sit, and he’d be damned if he had to look up at her to have this conversation.

“You caught the guy. So—”

“I caught a guy,” Abbie interrupted. “Not the guy. There’s no way that little prick is the mastermind behind all this. And he’s lawyered up, so now we won’t get anything worthwhile out of him.”

“You want to monitor when I mingle, fine.” He put both hands on the back of the couch and leaned, narrowing his eyes at her. “But cutting me completely off from my constituents is not an option. Not only will it hurt my campaign, but it’s just not right. I won’t be cowed out of this race.”

She slammed her folder on the end table. “When are you going to learn that your safety is more important than your campaign?”

His nostrils flared as he took several deep breaths to control his anger.

The woman didn’t get it. He didn’t take his safety for granted, and especially not after the shooting that put several people in the hospital. But goddamnit, if he acted like his constituents were lepers and locked himself away, then Hak Tanir would win.

She, more than anyone, should know that the United States did not negotiate with terrorists.

He straightened and flashed his best politician’s smile. “You’re damn good at your job, Miss Whitmore. I think we both know that my safety—and that of my supporters—will be a problem.”

That was a low blow, and he knew it. Maybe it would be enough to crack the hard exterior Abbie had developed. She’d avoided being alone with him since their night together.

And it irritated the hell out of him.

Why did he even care so damn much? She was a pain in the ass, and there were plenty of women—much more pleasant women—who liked spending time with him.

Too bad pleasant also meant boring.

“That’s nice of you to say, but you’re making it very difficult for me to do my job.” Her tone was contemptuous.

The job, the job, the job.

Then a bitter thought crossed his mind—It’s like looking in a damn mirror, isn’t it?

“I’m sure you’ll figure it out.”

She looked him over in that scrutinizing way she always did. In the way that would make a lesser man break.

“I always do,” she said smartly, then retrieved her folder from the table. Her heels click-clacked on the tile entry floor, followed seconds later by the slamming of his door.

Jonathan scrubbed a hand over his face.

Christ.
