We sit on camp chairs outside the van, gazing across the campground on the outskirts of Denver while drinking beer. Max picked something that has the word “unfiltered” on it, whatever that means. It took her a long time to pick it, out of a bunch of other options labeled “local” at the store, but it tastes good.

She’s telling me how she turned down what she thought was her dream job, with a PAC in California, for Ben. And how now, when everything else is falling apart, her job with Cindy—the consolation prize—is the one thing that still seems certain.

“I have a lot of anxiety,” she says, picking at the label on her beer. “It’s something I’m always struggling with. My job is the one thing that doesn’t put my brain on a hamster wheel.”

I’ve never met anyone like Max: So open about how she feels, even when the emotions are messy. I don’t know how to react, not when there’s a lot I still don’t want to talk about, so I drink my beer in silence and look out over the campground. The only car parked close to us has a tent set up next to it that is already dark and silent: likely people getting an early start in the morning. Just as I’m about to suggest we walk over to the lake nearby, Max gets up.

She comes over and rests a hand on my shoulder and nudges at my knees with hers. I laugh up at her. “Not good with silences, are you?” One of the many things I like about her.

“No, usually I am,” she denies, climbing into my lap by sliding bent legs on either side of mine. The chair sways and stretches a warning beneath us. It’s the closest I’ve been to another person since, well, maybe since the last time I was with Max. She smells like my dad’s old recliner and my mom’s bread-making habit. It’s just the van and the beer, but to my brain it signals home.

“I’m just not good with your silences,” she continues. She gazes down at me. “I think we should have sex,” she says again.

My body is immediately interested. I didn’t want to expect too much this weekend, but I’m not dying to turn down something I haven’t had in a while. Now Max is rubbing her nose against mine and I’m saying, “OK, sounds good, do you want to go in?”

The van doesn’t have any options besides the bed to sit on, so we re-create our position from outside. I lean back on my arms on the bed until they start to shake, and then pull her down over my chest on the thin mattress. She slides a hand down my pants to the crease of my groin, my favorite place to be touched by a woman.

We toss our clothes, but she’s cold, so she puts on my hoodie and nothing else. It gets me going more than anything else, having her sitting on top of me with a bare sex and my sweatshirt falling down her shoulder.
