JULIE

Julie and her husband, Ronnie, planned to have one genetically related child and wanted a girl. Julie described herself as “girly” and a “bookworm,” and she very much wanted a daughter who was similar. “I can’t wait to take my daughter for manicures and have tea parties,” she said. “I daydream about spending hours in bookstores together.” Because they were only having one child, Julie was determined to have the girl of her dreams.

She used fertility treatment and a genetic screening tool to screen the embryos. (While it’s common to use this tool to look for abnormalities, it also gives patients the advantage of learning the sex of the embryos.) Of course, she was concerned about the health of her future child, but she was also intensely focused on having a girl. In the end, she did have her girl—but her daughter did not fit the dreams Julie originally had. From a very early age, it was clear this child was not going to wear dresses or party shoes. She is interested in working on a farm and has never had a manicure. She loves being outdoors, frequently has Band-Aids on her fingers, and has no interest in reading for fun. Although she has both of her parents’ genetics, her personality is nothing like either of theirs. While this possibility may be hard to digest, it is a real possibility—including for those choosing donors. You cannot design the temperament, personality, or essence of your child. It is a combination of genes, environment, and gene expression.
