Smoking

2011 saw the introduction in Spain of a ban on smoking in public places, similar to the ban already in place in many other European countries. It covers cafés, restaurants and just about any enclosed public place. As in other countries, it is being widely respected. Other recent innovations to attempt to prise the population from their vices have included raising the minimum age at which you can buy tobacco products from 16 to 18, an increase in the cost of tobacco licences, meaning that places selling tobacco are sometimes scarce in rural areas and the introduction of an element of supervision to cigarette machines, which means in practice that a member of staff has to authorise each cigarette sale with the use of a remote control. Cigarettes are still cheaper than in most other countries in Europe.
