“She seems fine to me.”

“N-no! I mean, she’s fine now, but earlier, she ate something weird, and…”

Suzune frowned. “She ate something she shouldn’t have? What was it?”

“I don’t know. We were on a walk, when… Oh! Do you know where Tenso Shrine is?”

The doctor nodded, prompting her to continue.

“Well, I went there to pray, but Linda got under the offering box and started scratching. I saw something shiny stuck on her paw. Then she got it in her mouth…”

“And when you tried to take it away, she swallowed it,” Suzune finished, much to Yukina’s surprise.

“Did you see it happen, Doctor?”

“No, it’s just very common. Dogs think you’re trying to steal their prey, so they hurry to swallow it. How big was the object?”

Yukina made a face. “It was golden, not that big… I really don’t know! It all happened so fast.”

Suzune adjusted Linda in her arms and opened the door to the exam room. “Yuusuke, can you prep the X-ray machine? Wait right there, Yukina. I want to identify what it is first before we decide on a course of action… We might need to take it out with an endoscope. Or in the worst-case scenario, perform surgery to extract the object.”

Suddenly, the waiting room was tense again.

Yuusuke promptly followed Suzune into the exam area. Yukina, meanwhile, slumped to the floor weakly.

“S-surgery…?”

Mayuka crouched next to her and said soothingly, “Don’t worry, Yukina. I’m sure it’ll turn out fine. I bet it’s nothing…”

But Yukina put her hands on her cheeks and shook her head back and forth. “I’m so, so stupid! I was so focused on praying that I completely stopped paying attention to Linda…”

“Praying? It must have been about something really important.”

“No, it wasn’t! I was just hoping to win a drawing for some concert tickets. I’m so mad at myself. It wasn’t important at all. And if something happens to Linda…”

Yukina started to wail, much to Mayuka’s consternation.

“D-don’t cry… I’m sure it’ll be fine…,” the younger girl said unconvincingly. She looked to Hinata for help. He just shook his head. At times like this, there was nothing you could say. All they could do was wait for the diagnosis to come back.

What an exhausting day this has been, Hinata thought, sighing. Two separate people bursting into tears in the lobby. Poor Chris is probably upstairs wondering when I’m going to get home…

For a while, the only sound was Yukina’s quiet sobbing. Hinata and Mayuka kept glancing at each other as they waited for the door to the examination room to open again.

Hinata was looking at the ceiling, thinking about Chris, when Suzune emerged at last. “Thanks for waiting, Yukina,” she said, wiping her hands with a paper towel.

“H-how is it, Doctor?” Yukina asked, springing to her feet.

“From what I can see on the X-ray, there is an object in her stomach. It’s probably made of metal. We could try getting her to throw it up, but the shape will make it a little tricky.”

“What shape?”

“It looks like a classic five-pointed star.
