CHAPTER THIRTEEN

“HERE YOU GO, LADIES.” The waiter set the seafood platters in front of Lisa and Dr. Guzman that night. “Will there be anything else?”

“I’d like a margarita.” Lisa laid her napkin in her lap.

“Certainly.” The waiter gestured to the mature woman on the other side of the table. “You, ma’am?”

“I’m fine.” Guzman sipped her sweet tea.

“Okay, I’ll be right back.” The waiter smiled and left the table.

“I hadn’t intended to drink.” Lisa inhaled the wondrous scent of fried lobster and shrimp. “I just don’t get a chance to with Jake and all.”

Guzman scooped fried clams onto her spoon. “That’s the thing with dating an alcoholic.” She chewed. “Everyone in an alcoholic’s life is part of the coping process. Kind of like how everyone is in the life of a domestic violence victim.”

“Sneaky, Doc.” Lisa took a bite of her salad. “You can’t ever go without sneaking in therapy, huh?”

“I appreciate you inviting me out to dinner, but you didn’t have to do this.”

“I wanted to.” Lisa dipped shrimp in the sweet-and-sour sauce. “Just to show my appreciation for what you do for me. I know I’m not easy to deal with.”

“You don’t have to thank me.” Guzman scooped crab out of its shell. “It’s my job.”

“I know.” Lisa chewed. “But I am grateful for it and I wanted you to know.”

“I appreciate that.” Guzman sipped her tea.

“I don’t just think of you as my shrink.” Lisa dragged her fork across her food. “I think of you as a friend.”

“Well, that’s kind of you.” Guzman sprinkled hot sauce over her shrimp. “But I get the feeling you didn’t just invite me here to show appreciation.” She peeked over the top of her glasses. “You can’t fool a psychiatrist, so don’t even try.” She smiled.

Lisa set her fork down. “Well, I’ve been—”

The waiter walked up. “Here you go, ma’am.” He set the large margarita in front of Lisa. “Enjoy.” He left.

“Damn, this is big.” Lisa spun the glass around. “I’ll just drink a little. Sure you don’t want a taste?”

Guzman glared at her.

“Why are you looking at me like that?” Lisa sipped the drink and nearly lost feeling in her tongue because it was so strong. “Damn!” She set it down. “Someone back there doesn’t know what the hell they’re doing.”

“Lisa.” Guzman ate a piece of lobster. “What’s going on?”

“Okay.” She clasped her hands on the table. “I was so upset earlier that I almost blew a gasket. You know that guy from work...Winston?”

Guzman nodded and chewed.

“He heard Dee and me speaking about Mason and what he...” Lisa popped a piece of shrimp in her mouth. “What he did to me.”

“Oh. And how did you feel about that?”

“At first I was so mad I couldn’t see straight.” Lisa dipped shrimp in sauce. “I felt humiliated and confused. Then he told me he confronted Mason. Can you believe that?”

Guzman batted. “Well, that’s interesting.”

Lisa stabbed a piece of lettuce with her fork. “He had absolutely no right sticking his nose in my business.
