THE CAT CAME BACK

Like the proverbial cat that came back, Russ George simply wouldn’t quit. He didn’t know how, and continued undaunted. Russ, operating from his not-for-profit organization, Planktos, and enjoying some notoriety from a story on his work in the journal Nature,80 just kept going. In 2005, Russ secured the use of Ragland, a 101-foot Baltic trading schooner built in Denmark in 1913 to haul granite. Ragland was owned by the Canadian songwriter and rock star Neil Young,81 who happened to also own a ranch in the area and had his boat moored next to Russ’s at a marina an hour or two south of San Francisco.

In June 2005, Russ loaded Ragland with several bags of red ochre pigment, set the sails and headed west toward Hawaii. A week or so later, in international waters, he introduced the iron-rich pigment to the ocean. Russ claimed that this fertilization “removed the CO2 content from the atmosphere of about 3,000 households.”82

Two years later, Russ accepted an invitation from a Canary Islands university to conduct joint research activities involving ocean fertilization. Russ secured the 110-foot research vessel Weatherbird II and set sail east from the US in November 2007. However, when the ship reached Spain, the government refused to let it dock, and the expedition sputtered.
