TIP: Don’t use exotic woods like rosewood that may leach harmful oils into your food or reclaimed lumber that may have been chemically treated or exposed to toxins. Instead, choose mahogany or another hardwood that is naturally food safe.

CATCHALL TRAY

HARD

Every console or nightstand needs a little protection from your watch or the contents of your pockets, and this little landing pad is minimalist enough for any style. Because this project requires more carving than others in this book, set aside five or six hours for dedicated whittling (translation: start it at least a week before Father’s Day!). I used the gouge to create a handsome texture for the interior of the tray; it’s a subtle detail that defines understated elegance. Of course, you can put your own spin on this design by choosing a different texture (see this page for more ideas).

Pencil

1 piece of cedar or cherry wood, cut lengthwise with the grain to 8 x 3½ x 1 inches

Carving gloves or leather thumb guard (optional but encouraged)

Whittling knife

Bench hook

Gouge

100-, 150-, and 200-grit sandpaper, cut to 2 x 3 inches
