Once you have identified in which sectors to concentrate your efforts, you can then start screening for those top-notch businesses that are the market leaders in their respective industries.
Megatrends to Keep Your Eye on:
In keeping in line with our top-down approach, here are 7 global trends that could provide you with some potential stock investing opportunities.
Trend #1: Mobile Internet.
This past decade, world demand for cell phones capable of accessing the internet is skyrocketing. This is especially so in nations that do not have a strong landline infrastructure, such as China and India. Look for companies that either produce the phones or develop the technology that is integrated into each phone.
Trend #2: Senior Healthcare.
The over 50 crowd is the fastest growing sector of the American population. As this segment of the population ages they will require more services related to health care. Of particular note are the pharmaceutical companies and drug retailers who should see steadily increasing demand for their products, even should a recession hit. Of particular note, is the growth potential of the cannabis industry as more and more jurisdictions worldwide move to legalizing marijuana.
Trend #3: Precious Metals.
Gold and silver do especially well in times of great geopolitical unrest and inflation. Should things continue to heat up in Europe and the Middle East count on the demand for gold and silver to increase. There is currently a notable demand in India, China, Russia and the Middle East for the shiny stuff. Whether you decide to pick up physical gold or invest in shares of a growing producer is a matter of personal preference. They both have their inherent advantages.
Trend #4: Alternative Energy.
As technology advances so does the feasibility of integrating more and more green energy solutions into our current power grid. With nuclear reactor scares in the Ukraine and Japan, many nations are leaning towards other alternative sources of power. Companies to explore are those that specialize in wind turbines, solar panels, fuel cells, geothermal heating and the harnessing of ocean currents.
Trend #5: Oil & Gas.
Despite an increase in the green movement globally, oil and gas will continue to be a major play for investors moving into the future. This commodity is not going to get any cheaper with time. Most of the âeasyâ oil has been tapped out. Companies that should do well in the future are those specializing in major oil drilling. As well, should the price of a barrel of oil steadily increase over time, Canadaâs oil sands may be worth checking out.
Trend #6: Building Materials.
Two of the largest consumers of building materials are China and India whose economies will continue to grow over the next decade. Companies that should see a steady growth in sales as a result of increasing demand for construction material are those producing goods such as copper, steel and wood. Also look at companies whose job is to move building material globally either by rail or ship.
Trend #7: Counter Terrorism.
With continued global political instability, we will see more developed nations spending considerable sums of money on tracking, monitoring and detecting terrorist activity.
