Chapter

Eighteen

“I hate to be a walking cliché,” said Rosemary, entering the kitchen where Athena was making herself dinner. “But I've got nothing to wear.”

“That's ridiculous, Mum,” said Athena. “You have a whole new wardrobe.”

“But it's not as fancy as even Burk’s casual shirts.” Rosemary pouted.

“It's not a competition. If he didn't trust you to make yourself presentable enough, I doubt he would have asked you out in the first place.”

“This is so hard!” said Rosemary. “I've never had to do any of this before. I feel so awkward. And nervous.”

“Hang on.” Athena turned off the stove where her sausages were frying and walked her mother back upstairs to her room. Clothes were flung all over the bed. “This is a right mess!”

“I know,” said Rosemary. “I feel ridiculous. I'm too old for this.”

“Don't act like a teenager,” said Athena. She rifled through the clean clothes that Rosemary had thrown on the bed. “Here. This one.” She passed Rosemary a lacy black velvet top.

“It's not too revealing?” said Rosemary.

“Actually, maybe you should wear a dress.”

“Something even more revealing?” Rosemary asked.

“Stop being so self-conscious,” said Athena. “Look.” She picked up a dark green silk cocktail dress that was lying still attached to its hanger on the bed. “This one's new. You've never worn it before.” Athena held up the tag.

“It seemed a little bit posh.”

“Isn't that what you're going for, since Burk is such a fancy guy?”

“You've got a point.” Rosemary picked up the dress, the silk sliding through her fingers in a pleasant way.

“Plus, it'll bring out your eyes.”

“You're really enjoying this, watching me so uncomfortable,” Rosemary grumbled.

“I just think it's funny,” said Athena. “But also good. You should be going out and hanging out with people. I just don't want to hear any details.”

“You're not going to get any, trust me.”

“I guess you should put on the dress. Burk is supposed to be here in a minute.”

Rosemary looked at her watch. “Oh crap, you're right.”

Athena laughed, then left the room. Rosemary frantically stripped off and threw on the dress. She didn't have time for makeup. She'd been pacing her room trying out outfits that had gotten more and more ridiculous for over an hour. She did put on some lipstick and some earrings. She was never any good at makeup, anyway.

She left the room and then ran back to apply lick of mascara. The doorbell rang. All of a sudden, she was dreading the evening ahead.

“Mum!” Athena called out as Rosemary made her way downstairs.

“Maybe you can tell him I'm sick or something,” she said.

“No way,” said Athena, crossing her arms.

“I'm not ready,” said Rosemary in a stroppy voice.

“Yes, you are.” Athena grabbed her mother's arm and led her to the door and even opened it up for her before fleeing back to the kitchen.

“Rosemary.” Burk was standing on the doorstep in a crisp designer shirt. Pale grey that Rosemary assumed was probably Italian. “You look ravishing.”

“I hope you don't mean that literally,” said Rosemary.

Burk laughed. “Do you think I invited you on a date so I could eat you?”

“Sorry,” said Rosemary.
