By the time Rory returns with light, I have Yue secured at the wrists and the ankles. Yue is threatening me with all kinds of gruesome fates, hissing and spitting with rage.

I look up as Rory re-enters the room holding forth another one of those glass globes.

“What happened to Longinus?” I ask, turning back to look at the large armchair behind which he was supposed to be waiting with his silver atomiser. All I can see is a pair of boots sticking out. “Crap, he collapsed?”

Before I can head over to check on him, Rory catches me by the arm. “It would be best if you come with me into the kitchen. Don't go near Longinus. Actually, can we move her as well?” She gestures at Yue.

“Um, sure. You'll need to help me, though.”

Yue curses and swears and threatens us both as we drag her awkwardly through the doorway and into the kitchen. Now that there is light, the mad rage in her eyes is fully visible. Rory closes the door behind us as soon as we’re inside.

The kitchen is every bit as neat as the living room, pots hanging from hooks on the wall, arranged by order of size, their base showing scratch marks where they've been scrubbed thoroughly. Glass jars of spices are lined up along the counter, and an empty metal kettle is balanced on what I'm assuming is a stove, although it doesn't look like any kind of stove we have back home.

“We need to do something about your bleeding,” Rory says.

I glance down at the cuts on my arm. Although long, they're shallow gashes—nothing to worry about. It can wait until I get back to Panong. “It's fine,” I say aloud. “I'll deal with it once we've located Arjuna.”

“Actually, you need to deal with it now,” Rory says. She shifts awkwardly. “It's Longinus. He's, er… He's afraid of blood. That's why he collapsed, before.”

“He's what? Isn't he an assassin?”

Rory's eyes flash defensively. “He is, and all, and a damn good one at that. And it ain't your place to judge him, alright?”

“I wasn't judging him, I was just surprised… It's a weird profession to go into if you're afraid of blood.”

“Yeah, well, things are complicated, right? Anyway, as I said, it ain't none of your business, so you don't say nothing and you don't do nothing other than clean up the blood on your arm, got it?” Rory's bordering on hostile, now.

“Okay, okay. I wasn't trying to be difficult. Just playing catch up, that’s all. I'll see what I can do about my arm.”

“Well, alright then,” Rory grumbles.

“Thanks for letting me know that little tidbit,” Yue growls as I start hunting around the kitchen for some kind of rag to bind my arm with. “When I get rid of these chains, I'm going to drown him in blood.”

“You’re not going to drown him in blood or anyone else for that matter,” I reply distractedly as I continue my hunt for a rag.

Rory kicks her in the stomach just once, but it's enough for Yue to double over in pain.
