BOATS, STAGES, TRAINS, AND PLANES

Hundreds of miles of trails created by Native Americans pursuing seasonal activities or engaging in trade with each other criss-crossed Wisconsin. Soon fur traders, missionaries, and lumberman were using the trail systems and water routes to hunt, trade, proselytize, and to reach vast white pine forests. The booming lumber era required faster ways of moving people and goods. Lumbermen who rafted down the Chippewa River were soon able to take one of the stage lines back upstream. Steamboats and keelboats ferried people and supplies up and downstream. Stage lines, which closely followed Native American trails, gave way to railroads that carried goods, lumber, and people faster and farther. Interurban trains between Chippewa Falls and Eau Claire ran several times a day, before buses took over those routes. And then there were planes, including one manufactured in Chippewa Falls.
