CHAPTER TWENTY-THREE

“Have you decided what to do about him?” Aidan asked from across the kitchen island. After we wrapped up at the truck stop diner, the vampires had split off to get Amber and Hayden back to the Walker House safely, and we had gone home to the Executioner House for some much-needed rest. Max, Aidan, Red, and Tessa were all in the kitchen debating the best barbeque sauce to put on ribs when we walked in. Marcel and I had just finished filling them in on everything that had gone down with Carl’s meeting, including Marcel’s conversation with him before we left.

“I don't think he’ll ever be happy here,” the alpha confessed.

“Is he a bad fit?” Tessa asked as she cracked the cap off a bottle of beer and handed it to Max.

“It’s not that,” Marcel replied with a shake of his head. “If he was open to trying, I think he could find a family with us but he resents having his hand forced and that’s making him stubborn.”

“You’re sure? I don't mind waiting for you.”

“Get some sleep, Executioner,” Aidan said with a sympathetic smile. “We’ll keep him company.”

“All right, I’m tapping out then. Goodnight, everyone.” I turned and began my long trek upstairs to my room. I had intended on taking a hot shower but one look at the bed waiting for me and all plans were abandoned. Without bothering to touch the lights, I stripped down as I walked, leaving a trail of discarded clothes in my wake. I slid between the sheets, relishing the cool cotton against my bare skin.

I thought I’d only rested my eyes for a moment, but when I opened them again, Marcel’s arm was loosely draped over my hip and he was quietly snoring behind me. Carefully, I shifted in place to roll onto my back. The motion was enough to cause Marcel to stir. Without opening his eyes, he placed a light kiss on my shoulder and then rolled away from me onto his other side.

I closed my eyes and heaved a deep, slow breath, hoping sleep would just take hold again. Instead, my mind began to flit from one thought to another. Rather than disturb Marcel with my tossing and
